Karl
The Tampa Bay Buccaneer Fan

2000-2010
Tampa being a steamy hot climate I thought this was a perfect representation. I would like to make flip flops for him and maybe get a miniature beer can to finish him off!
Made from a 10 years ago I think was by Ute (sorry I can't find the info on the pattern.) My son's name is Karl so I just had to make it, tho it doesn't look a thing like him! My son is now 29. : ) The decade would be 2000-2010. I used some Buccanner scraps for the shorts and the tank top is from a Moda fabric.

Pirate Decade (17th Century)
This 17th century Pirate is called 'Rayner' (meaning wise warrior), he has a definite scruffy and un-kept look from not been around civilization a while. He loves his hidden stash of pearls, coins and other jewels but always has his jewel studded sword ready in case of uninvited guests coming on the scene.
Rayner is from an 18" male doll pattern called "A Dude for All Seasons" designed by Mary Ann Kaahanui and Bonnie B. Lewis. The costume "The Pirate Costume" was designed by Sylvia Schorr. Both patterns are from "Dollmakers Journey".
Due to lack of time, I have not made any dolls since the last 'Doll Net' competition. This current competition made me find the time and although the Pirate was much more of a challenge than I had expected, it was great making another doll.
Rayner is made of Doe Suede fabric filled with sheep's roving. This project has been the biggest challenge for me yet. I learned to make poseable fingers and hands and to soft sculpt facial features. New to me was also sewing in leather to make his hat, vest, britches and boots. His unkept hair and scruffy beard was felted with brown mohair.

Sir Geoffrey Brighton

Renaissance Era - 1600-1650
Renaissance is a French word meaning "new birth".
Born from a pattern by Priscella McDonald. He is button jointed at the shoulders and is self standing due to brass rods in his legs and has wired fingers. His fingers are adorned with rings, two on his right hand and three on his left. His face is sculpted and is colored with prisma colored pencils. He has fringe for his hair. His body is sewn from Kona cotton and his legs were made from quilting fabric.
Sir Geoffrey's knickers and shirt is made from satin and trimmed with gold braid, gold sequins, and lace. His vest is sewn from purple costume fabric and lined with satin and trimmed with purple sequins. Lastly, his cloak, hat, and shoes are sewn with quilting fabric. His cloak is lined with purple satin and trimmed in gold braid. He has beading at all points of his cloak, collar, and sleeves.
Sir Geoffrey wanted his clothing made from purple fabric because he believes that purple represents royalty and he is getting ready to go to a ball.
I had as much fun bringing Sir Geoffrey to life as Sir Geoffrey did developing his personality.

1770 Decade
At Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette's time, in France the nobles attending dance parties in the palace. M. le Marquis is preparing to go to one of them, then he is ready to go and now practices his best reverence to perform him at the royal palace where, surely, will know who will be Mme. the Marquise.
For this reason he has been dressed in his best brocade justaucorps, has put his best wig, family brooch and ring, now ready, very nervous to appear at the party.
M. le Marquis was made in muslin with cotton jersey skin, and wire armature, he is painted with colored pencils, and his outfit is my own design and preparation, it is brocade fabric, embellished with golden trimming, his shoes are leather, he has 18 inches tall not including the base.
Body pattern is from "An Elf Named Stretch" by Mimi's dolls and face is from "Noeline" by Jill Maas, both with my own modifications..

Canute
The Great Viking King

Viking Decade
This Viking warrior was inspired by Canute the Great born circa 994 to 1035, Shaftsbury in Dorset. He started life as a Viking warrior and later became a king on Feb, 1014. He ruled England, Denmark, Norway, and part of Sweden.
This doll is an original made by me. The pattern I made was inspired by Terese Cato's Gnome pattern that she made for the Soft Doll magazine. My Viking warrior is made of a cream fleece and his clothes are made out of different fleeces, cottons, and vinyl for his shoes and part of his helmet. I used acrylic paints for his face and a long pile fur for all his hair (facial and head). I made his props as well. The horse is made out of a soft fur. The sword was made out of oven bake clay and painted with acrylics.

1990's
Although of no specific decade if I had to choose I would pick from the '90's as that was the decade my son was born and Fred like my son has a very bright sparkle in his eye- depicting his sense of fun and love of life. (Please note my son is much better looking than Fred!!!)
Pattern designed by Jill Maas of 'Slightly Weathered Ladies and More". I have made this doll according to the pattern with just a couple of changes to the construction of his box and of course I have picked my own materials. I also made an extra frog.

Francis

1670's
My doll's name is Francis. He is from the 1670s, the Era of Louis XIV and is supposed to represent a courtier from the French Court going to a masquerade at Versailles.
Francis is cloth over armature, the pattern for his body is adapted from a female doll, Shaniqua by Nancy Katz. His face is the same cloth as his body, with clay enhancements and cloth over the clay. The red heels of his shoes were adapted from La Femme by Arley Berryhill. His mask is a pattern by Arley Berryhill, as taught by Nancy Katz. Francis's rings and cravat pin are clay, designed by me to match Francis's dance partner, Francoise (not shown). All of his garments were designed by me using period photographs of Louis XIV and the wedding suit of James II of England.
